Closeboard and feather-edge
These names are commonly used for the same family of fencing, built from overlapping upright timber boards. A solid appearance makes it a useful starting point when privacy is a priority. The construction, posts and dimensions still need specifying for the site, so the name alone does not describe the whole installation.
Overlap fencing
Overlap panels have a familiar garden appearance, using overlapping horizontal boards. Compare the panel construction and supporting posts as well as the appearance. When replacing a panel, measure the opening and check the existing fixings rather than assuming every similar-looking panel will fit.
Picket fencing
Picket fencing defines an edge while keeping a more open view. It may suit a decorative boundary where full privacy is not the main objective. The spacing, height and intended use should be discussed, particularly around children or pets. A decorative style is not automatically suitable for every containment need.
Trellis
Trellis creates a lighter, more open screen and can provide a framework for planting. Its supporting structure needs to suit the position and intended use. If it is being considered above an existing fence, the total height and the capacity of the supporting fence need checking.
Slatted fencing
Slatted fencing can create a contemporary finish. Privacy depends on the arrangement and spacing of the slats, including the view from an angle. Discuss whether appearance or screening is the priority so the proposed design reflects how the space will be used.
Compare the complete specification
Think about the posts, fixings, ground clearance, finish and upkeep as well as the panels. Changes in ground level and exposed positions can affect the arrangement. No timber fence should be selected solely from a small photograph without checking dimensions and site conditions.
