Balance appearance and practical use
Consider how the fence will look alongside the building, path and neighbouring boundaries. Even spacing and a planned finish at corners can make a modest fence look considered. Think about the view from both directions, since the posts and rails may be more apparent on one side.
If your main aim is screening an outdoor seating area, compare a solid closeboard fence instead. Picket fencing deliberately leaves openings, so increasing its height does not make it equivalent to a closed screen. Decide where the fence starts and ends, and identify any entrance that needs to remain open. If an opening or gate is part of the project, have it separately described and confirmed rather than assume it is included with the fence run. If an individual component is damaged, a repair may be possible, although the profile and finish of older timber may not match new material exactly.
